Tour de France Experience
August 17th, 2006 Dr. Timmerman
For those that don’t know, I am a bit of a Tour de France nut and cycling fan in general. On a bit of a whim, planets aligned, other plans fell through, I redeemed some frequent flier miles and headed to France to watch the Tour. It satisfied one of my goals a little earlier than I planned. I planned to ride up the Alpe d’Huez in 2007, so I thought if I was going to be in the area, why not attempt it this year? Obviously, the main problem is my level of fitness…! I met some guys from REI that were doing essentially the same thing, although they were going to bike much more than I planned.
I did it anyway, and as you can see in this photo, it was a struggle. I did it in just under 2 hours, which is close to walking it I think…
The weather was VERY hot, so at one point I decided to drive down to Cannes/Monaco for a couple days to cool off. I think my next trip should be to just hang out in Provence with my wife. VERY nice place in the world…
Had a great time though, got to see a historic, if not controversial, Tour. Had so much fun that I hope to do it all again soon…
