Dental fear is a phenomenon experienced by over 75% of adults. Of those, somewhere from 5 to 10% suffer from a much more serious condition called dental phobia. As a result, they do everything they can to avoid seeing a dentist, causing their oral health to suffer. Thankfully, dental sedation can help those with a fear of the dentist and a variety of other issues make it through their appointments and receive the treatment they need. To help you learn more about dental sedation, here are a few frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Dental sedation is a medical procedure involving the administration of a sedative during a dental procedure. These sedatives can be administered in a number of ways including through taking a pill or inhalation. There are several different types of sedation, and your dentist can recommend which one is right for you based on your needs.

What Are the Types of Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry makes your visits to the dentist convenient and comfortable. Two common types of dental sedation include:

  • Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is the least risky form of dental sedation. It’s safe for both children and adults and is inhaled through a mask. It’s fast acting and wears off quickly, allowing you to drive yourself to and from your appointment.
  • For oral conscious sedation, your dentist gives you a prescription and directions on when to take the sedative before you come in for treatment. You will also need to take a small amount of medication in office on the day of your appointment. It’s commonly used for restorative services, and someone will need to drive you to and from the procedure.

What Are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

Through sedation dentistry, you’ll receive the care you need without the anxiousness that may come with it. Dental sedation can be helpful for those who:

  • Experience dental fear or anxiety
  • Can’t sit still or experience discomfort from reclining in the treatment chair for long periods of time
  • Are undergoing lengthy or extensive dental work
  • Have disabilities
  • Have a low pain tolerance, poor gag reflex, or sensitive gums and teeth

Whether you need dental sedation to lessen pain, ease dental anxiety, or to receive extensive dental work, your dentist is here to answer all your questions. Through sedation dentistry, you can remove barriers between you and the care you deserve!
