How old is too old for braces?

Can a person be too old for braces? Is there an age limit? Dr Lance Timmerman DMD in Tukwila is often asked about braces (or getting straight teeth in a non traditional way) and if they are too old. The short answer: it is NEVER too late!

In the modern era, beauty is a common goal. More importantly is HEALTH. It may not seem obvious, be straight teeth leads to better health, so many people later in life are looking to braces.  With new technology, we have many options to getting straight teeth, from traditional metal brackets, tooth colored cosmetic braces with 6 Month SmilesInvisalign, and Inman aligners.

Sometimes part of a larger treatment plan, one that includes many types of dental care, orthodontics can save time, pain, and money.  If teeth need to be crowned or veneered but are crooked, the treatment may require root canal therapy or extractions in order to line things up and balance the bite.  If the teeth can be put in their correct place these extractions or root canals can be avoided.

A requirement for ANY orthodontic treatment is healthy gums.  If your gums bleed, then braces need to wait.  Once gums are healthy and inflammation is gone, then braces can be done.  If too much bone surrounding teeth has gone away, then braces may not be an option.  It is NOT due to being too old, it is due to lack of supporting bone.

Probably the largest barrier, or most influential aspect, is the cost.  Each method has its own pros and cons, and vary in cost.  Dr Timmerman wants ALL his patients to be comfortable, not just physically in the treatment but also financially.  If one can’t pay in full at the start of treatment (and enjoy a pre-payment accounting reduction), then we can offer convenient payment plans.  We have several to choose from, so give us a call so we can get the ball rolling!
